Chrysostomos (secular name Nikolaos) Vergis. He was born in 1924 in Athens. He studied at the Theological School of Athens, receiving his degree in 1952. He was ordained deacon in 1952 and priest in 1953 by Metropolitan Chrysostomos Daskalakis of Messinia. He served as preacher of the Holy Metropolis of Messinia from 1952 to 1962. He served as Director of Confession at the Apostolic Diakonia from 1962 to 1970. At the same time, from 1962 to 1967, he served as Deputy and Spiritual Director of the Theological Boarding School of the Apostolic Diakonia, and as Confession Teacher at the Pneumatikon Frontistirion of Penteli. In 1962 and 1963, he was sent by the Holy Synod to West Germany to attend to the spiritual needs of Greek emigrants. Afterwards, he served as parish priest of the Church of Saint John Gargarettas in Athens from 1964 to 1974. He served as Secretary in the M.S.E./D. of Pastoral Work from 1970 to 1973. From 1974, he served in the Holy Synod as Special Secretary to His Beatitude Archbishop Seraphim (Tikas) and Director of the Personnel of the Holy Synod and Ecclesiastical Protocol. On July 14, 1974, he was ordained Metropolitan of Chalkida. On November 14, 2001, he resigned for health reasons. He fell asleep in the Lord on January 26, 2010.
