HOLY MONASTERY OF PANAGIA MYRTIDIOTISSIS PALIOURA

It is the newest monastery of our Metropolitan district, founded thanks to the love and goodwill of our Metropolitan, as well as the free will and wholehearted cooperation of three blessed souls, who for decades practiced near the Parish Chapel of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Palioura Dirfion, yearning for the angelic monastic life.

In 2006, by decision of His Eminence Metropolitan of Chalkida Mr. Chrysostomos, with the approval of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece and relevant approval from the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs, which was also published in the Government Gazette, the new women’s Holy Monastery was founded, dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos Myrtidiotissa (celebrated on September 24th).

The Holy Monastery was housed in property belonging to the nuns, which they willingly donated and now belongs to the Legal Entity of the Holy Monastery and is located next to the Parish Chapel of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Palioura, which still belongs to the Parish of Saint Nicholas Palioura.

On the morning of Saturday, July 21, 2007, His Eminence Metropolitan of Chalkida Mr. Chrysostomos visited the new Holy Monastery and the adjacent Chapel of the Dormition of the Theotokos, presiding over the Divine Liturgy, at the end of which he also performed the Monastic Tonsure of the first three nuns, Aspasia Sarri, who received the monastic name XENI, Evangelia Lioliou, who received the monastic name EVLAMPHA, and Maria Kourniati, who received the monastic name MARIAM. These three nuns form the Monastic Council responsible for the administration of the Holy Monastery, and, after prior consultation with the nuns, the Abbess was elected by the apostolic-ordained clergy, the nun Mariam Kourniati.
