HOLY MONASTERY OF THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE THEOTOKOS – SKOPELOS

With a fortress-like appearance, unusual in other monastic complexes, is the renowned Monastery of the Annunciation of the Theotokos, built on the inaccessible side of the gorge “opposite the town of Skopelos on the elevated mountains” (P. Lazaridis).

Entering from the northwest side entrance, the visitor encounters on the left the chapel of Saint Nicholas, on the right the kitchen, the refectory, the cells, and the Katholikon, in the form of cross-in-square quaternions with domes, but without a narthex.

The door frames of the Katholikon, on the south and west sides, are marble with rich carved plant motifs. They bear similarities to the door frames of the Katholikon of the Monastery of Saint John the Forerunner (renovated in 1721) and the Parish Church of Panagia Faneromeni (1711). The three churches share common features in their doorways with those of Saint Constantine of Paroikia in Paros, justified by the fact that Hieromonk Pachomios, founder of Faneromeni, was from Paros, as evidenced by a recently found inscription at the Evangelistria: “Contributor Pachomios from Paros”.

Impressive and of excellent craftsmanship is the iconostasis of the Katholikon, as well as the Episcopal throne, works from the year 1777.

Notable are the preserved icons, the first being that of the Virgin “Pammakaristos” from the 15th–16th century, “seated on a throne with a silver crown, and the infant golden” (K. Dapontes), the first pilgrimage site and refuge for the Christians of the island in all needs and occasions.

The founder of the Monastery was the father of Kaisarios, Hatzistefanis Dapontes, in gratitude for his miraculous rescue from some danger, in 1712.

It houses treasured relics of Saints Pelagia, George, and other unnamed saints.

Feast Day: Annunciation of the Theotokos (March 25).

The duties of the Monastery Council are performed, according to N.D. 374/1947 “On the amendment and completion of ecclesiastical laws 326/1945 and 1144/1946 and regulation of certain ecclesiastical matters” (Government Gazette A.F. 163), by the Very Reverend Archimandrite Fr. Alexios Papastamoulos (monk 1).
