IERA MONI PANAGIAS PERIBLEPTOU POLITIKON
In a picturesque location and in a place known as "akatoptevton", near the village of Politika, stands the monastery of Panagia, which was rebuilt in 1969. Its origins, however, date back to the Byzantine period, since both the village of Politika and the Monastery are related to the Byzantine Euboea.
The name Politika probably comes from the association of the Constantinopolitan citizens and the name of the Monastery as perceived, confirming its connection with Constantinople.
From that period only the katholikon survived, in the form of a cross-in-square church, registered with a bell tower, which leans on four supports, and a part from the old environment.
From the existing elements it is estimated that the Monastery was built in the 11th or 12th century. In the episcopal patriarchal sigil of 1582 the church is mentioned as «monydrion» and as «church of the village in times remembered».
After a long period of neglect and abandonment, in 1969 the historical Monastery was rebuilt when a female community was established. With memory and wage, but also with the contribution of the local Metropolis and Christians, everything was renewed. The katholikon was renovated internally, cells, workshop and utility spaces were built.
Unfortunately, the earthquakes in the Messapion area in June 2003 significantly affected both the historic Katholikon and the Monks’ cells. For the restoration of the lands, an initiative was undertaken by the Holy Metropolis, the Holy Monastery, but also many believers who love the Monastery and its diversified environment.
The Monastery houses a small section of the holy Cross and some relics (anonymous).
Feast Days: Dormition of the Theotokos (15/8), Saint Triados (Monday of Pentecost), Saint Nektarios (9/11).
By decision of the Metropolitan Council, the Ordinary Episcopal Council, Metropolitan Protopresbyter Nikolaos Danelis (monk 2) executes it regularly.
