ΜΟΝΗ ΠΡΟΔΡΟΜΟΥ 1μ.jpgHOLY MONASTERY OF THE PRECIOUS FORERUNNER, SKOPELOS

At the top of the mountain named Palouki, northeast of Skopelos town, is the Monastery of the Precious Forerunner, founded in 1612 by the hieromonk and first abbot Symeon. Following a written request, he succeeded in having it designated as a “Patriarchal Stavropegion” by the issuing of a sigillion letter by Ecumenical Patriarch Timotheos II (1619).

His successor, hieromonk Philaretos, also founded the Monastery of Saint Barbara, 300 meters away, so that – according to tradition – his sister could become a nun there.

Philaretos also renovated the Monastery in 1721, as evidenced by an inscription above the Catholicon’s entrance. This church follows the cross-in-square four-column type, with the exception that it has two side choirs, similar to Mount Athos churches. The roof does not exactly match the interior layout due to renovations over time. The iconostasis is not original, with only some parts preserved. It is gilded and in some areas painted to emphasize primarily the vegetal decoration. Its icons are of exquisite art, dating from the 16th to 18th centuries. Beautiful are also the feast-day icons and several on the surrounding walls. The floor is made of glazed clay tiles. The cells were renovated after the earthquakes of 1965. In the old monastery refectory, there is also a wall painting of the second abbot, Philaretos.ΜΟΝΗ ΠΡΟΔΡΟΜΟΥ 2μ.jpg

The Monastery contains chapels of Saint George, the Archangels, Saints Nektarios and Riginos, Bishop of Skopelos. Outside the Monastery, there are the chapels of All Saints (cemetery) and Saint Polyxeni.

Feast day: Nativity of the Precious Forerunner (24/6).

The duties of the Monastery Council are performed, in accordance with Legislative Decree 374/1947 “On the modification and completion of ecclesiastical laws 326/1945 and 1144/1946 and the regulation of certain ecclesiastical matters” (Government Gazette A. F. 163), by the Very Reverend Archimandrite Fr. Alexios Papastamoulos (2 nuns).
