IERA MONI KOIMHMESEOS TIS THEOTOKOU MAKRYMALLI

Located in Psachna and a short distance from the village of Makrymali, it is built on the slope of a hill, the Makrymali Monastery. Due to successive destructions that occurred, there are not enough written testimonies about its early years of history, and everything mentioned in that period is based on oral tradition.

According to this, there were two brothers who had nearby their shepherd huts. Every evening "they saw light across the hill". When they went to that spot, they found an icon of the Virgin Mary. They brought it to their huts, built a small chapel where they placed it, and raised it in front of the altar. Later, they restored the buildings, became monks, and built the monastery, lasting about the 12th century. In fact, it is said that due to the long-haired brothers, the monastery took its name.

Worth noting are the preserved wall paintings in the church of the Holy Sacraments (especially the Platytera with two angels on either side). Important value and artistry also have several icons of the iconostasis, dating to 1882. Its cemetery includes a silver Evangelion from 1754, an Agios Potirios from 1796, and a Thymiato from 1808. The monastery’s library has many rich collections of religious and historical content.

A spiritual treasure as well are the Holy relics of the Saints: Parthenios, Paraskevi, Charalambos, Panteleimon, Anargyroi, Vasileios Ankyras, Nikitas, Auxentios, Stratonos, Ignatios, Timios Prodromos and Reginos of Skopelos. Its Metochia is Panagia Chiliadou, Agios Demetrios (15th century), and several chapels.
